The Rise of ISIS

Author lecture and booksigning.

Dr. Peter Mansoor, Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired), is the General Raymond E. Mason Jr. Chair of Military History at The Ohio State University and a military analyst for CNN.  He assumed his academic position after a 26 year career in the U.S. Army that culminated in his service as the executive officer to General David Petraeus. He commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division from 2003-2005, was the founding director of the U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Center, and served on the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff "Council of Colonels" that reexamined the strategy for the Iraq War.  A 1982 distinguished graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Col. Mansoor served in a variety of command and staff positions in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

The seizure of much of northern and western Iraq by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, in the first six months of 2014 shocked the world.  The group, headed by the Iraqi terrorist leader Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, seemed to spring out of nowhere.  But, ISIS is, in fact, the reincarnation of al-Qaeda in Iraq, the terrorist group that had been largely defeated by the Sunni tribal Awakening and the U.S. surge in Iraq in 2007 and 2008.  Driven across the border into Syria, the group metastasized, using the chaos created by the civil war to carve out a new sanctuary in that country.  ISIS leaders then sealed an alliance with Sunni Ba-athist from Saddam Hussein's defeated army, turning a deadly terrorist  group into one of the most capable hybrid military forces in the region.

Estate Wines

From Grapegrowing to Winemaking with Winemaker and Viticulturist Patricia Chalfant from Caesar Creek Vineyards.

Estate wines are made on site from grapes grown in the owner's vineyard, fermented, bottled, labeled, and aged in their winery, and sold in their tasting room.  This is unusual for an Ohio winery, but it is Caesar Creek Vineyards objective to be true to the finest winery traditions of France and California where the winemaker knows and loves her land and vines, and makes the best possible wine she can from them.

Patricia Chalfant, 1999 graduate of Springboro High School, is the wine maker and vineyard manager at Caesar Creek Vineyards in Xenia.  She holds a bachelors degree in biology from Ohio University, and a masters degree in horticulture and crops from Ohio State University.
