Backpacking 101


This indoor workshop will teach you the techniques to have a safe and enjoyable backpacking trip.  Topics such as backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, stoves, food, clothes, footwear, weather, terrain, comfort zone, trip planning, and Leave No Trace Principles will be covered.

Open Seating.  Ages 13 and up.

Andy "Captain Blue" Niekamp is the Chief Adventure Officer for Outdoor Adventure Connection, which specializes in back-country adventures.  He has backpacked over 14,000 miles including three end-to-end hikes of the Appalachian Trail and thru hikes of the Buckeye Trail, Ohio To Erie Trail, Sheltowee Trace, Long Trail, Ozark Highlands Trail and Colorado Trail.  Andy brings his wealth of backpacking experience and his passion for hiking to this program.  He has two rules for his backpacking trips.  Number 1: Be safe.  Number 2:  Have fun!

Yvonne "Princess Doah" has over 6,800 miles of backpacking experience including hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, Florida Trail, Benton McKaye Trail and Mountains To Sea Trail.  She got her start in backpacking later in life after raising three daughters.  In 2007, she enrolled in a beginning backpacking class at Five Rivers MetroParks and has been on numerous trips since that time.  Yvonne is a certified Wilderness First Responder.
